Is this Globalization?

... was the question each of us asked as we entered the classroom to check if we were in the correct course option. Our professor found it most amusing and he now calls us his globalisers. It's a German geek thing.

So, seven weeks in, and my head is exploding with ideas. World Systems. Enlightenment. Commerce and Commodities. Slavery and Empire. Missionaries. Free Trade. Boycotts and Blockages.  Topics far more interesting than the repeated doom and gloom news coverage of the credit crunch.

Today I borrowed Akira Iriye's Global Community to add to my ever expanding bibliography. The Wii that I purchased has also arrived. I suspect it is unwise to have an additional distraction from reading duties, but at least I will get to play Mario Kart with my friends whatever their geopositioning.

Oh, on my way home, I helped a NYC visitor with his transport query. As we were traveling the same direction, we ended up conversing, and turns out he works for Unicef as a specialist for Child Protection. I reciprocate with a brief account of my humankind interests and he imparted me with something to properly think about.

He also told me how he noticed that the McDonalds in London are much nicer than the ones in the US, to which I responded that it's all probably due to clever marketing and experiential point of sale or whatever.

Definitely Talkative Tuesdays this term.
